The 2023 Geelong Business Excellence Awards were nothing short of spectacular, and they deserve to be celebrated. On Thursday 19 October, over 670 guests from the Geelong Business Community came together at GMHBA Stadium for an evening that celebrated innovation, sustainability, and the remarkable businesses that make Geelong shine.

This year, the awards went above and beyond emphasising sustainability. For the second consecutive year, the entire event is certified carbon-neutral, demonstrating a profound commitment to environmental responsibility. This sets a significant example for the region and reinforces the importance of adopting eco-friendly practices in the business world.

The list of winners is impressive and diverse, representing various sectors and sizes of businesses. From Directbor winning Business of the Year to Justine Martin winning Business Leader of the year, each winner across 20 categories showcased excellence in their respective fields. The range of awards underscores the depth and diversity of Geelong’s business community.

These awards aren’t just about recognising achievements; they are about celebrating the strength and resilience of the Geelong business community. They inspire businesses to strive for excellence, innovation, and sustainability, ultimately contributing to the growth and prosperity of the region.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and finalists, as well as our gratitude to major sponsor LBW Business + Wealth Advisors.

Finally, Geelong Chamber welcomed Shadow Cabinet to Geelong on Monday 23 October. It was a great opportunity to host John Pesutto and 25 of his team including Shadow Ministers along with over 30 business leaders who voiced their opinions of the region and their industry sectors. It’s important we continue to host politicians and policy makers of all sides and provide access for our business community’s voices to be heard. We’ll continue to curate more of these opportunities in future.

Next month the Chamber is in Queenscliff to connect with our Bellarine members and we look forward to supporting Cottage By The Sea for our next After 5 networking event.

Daniel Andrews, a prominent figure in Australian politics, recently bid farewell as the Premier of Victoria after a seven-year tenure marked by a mix of achievements and controversies. As Victorians reflect on his legacy, they must grapple with the complex impact he has had on the state.

One of the significant aspects of Andrews’ legacy is his commitment to infrastructure development. During his leadership, Victoria saw the initiation of major projects such as the Metro Tunnel, the West Gate Tunnel, and the Level Crossing Removal Program. These initiatives aimed to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance public transportation, contributing to the state’s long-term growth.

In the realm of social reforms, Andrews made strides by introducing the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act, making Victoria the first Australian state to legalize euthanasia, offering a compassionate choice to terminally ill individuals. Progress was also made in the areas of gender equality and environmental policy.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic played a central role in defining Andrews’ leadership. His swift and decisive actions to combat the virus earned both praise and criticism. While the stringent lockdown measures protected public health, they took a toll on the people of Victoria, particularly small businesses, which are still grappling with the repercussions, including mental health challenges.

Furthermore, Andrews’ economic legacy is marked by challenges. Victoria’s finances are strained due to the pandemic’s economic fallout and the substantial spending required to manage the crisis. The state’s mounting debt and lack of future investment available in certain sectors, especially for small businesses, pose ongoing challenges. Victoria’s debt approaching $200 billion has led to higher taxes and increased costs of doing business, making it less attractive as other states are actively competing to attract Victorian businesses due to these unfavourable conditions, posing a significant challenge that Andrews leaves behind.

Payroll tax, land tax, increasing insurance premiums and Workcover Premiums are burdening businesses. The number of registered businesses in Victoria decreased by over 7,000 in 2022/23 over while other states experienced growth. For Victoria, that is highly concerning.

As Premier Jacinta Allan takes the reins, the Geelong Chamber of Commerce and many others hope to collaborate on opportunities to support businesses and alleviate the financial burden placed on Victorians to repay the state’s debt. We call out the need for changes to create a more favourable environment for businesses, with the recent success of Invest SA serving as a stark example of the potential benefits but also, the constant competition for economic investment and economic development.

Daniel Andrews’ legacy in Victoria is multifaceted. His leadership brought about infrastructure development and progressive social reforms, but it is also marked by economic challenges, particularly high debt and costs for businesses. As Victoria transitions to new leadership, the state faces the task of addressing these challenges and steering its future in a direction that promotes prosperity for all.

Empowering Business Excellence: The Vital Role of Geelong Chamber of Commerce’s Training Programs and Resources

In the ever-evolving landscape of modern business, organisations are constantly seeking opportunities to stay ahead of the curve, adapt to change, and foster growth. For businesses in Geelong and beyond, the Geelong Chamber of Commerce’s new leadership courses stands as a beacon of innovation and progress. With two programs on offer, these initiatives not only benefit individual enterprises and business leaders but also contribute to the overall economic vitality of the region.

Entrepreneurs often grapple with challenges like access to market data, networking opportunities, and funding sources. The chamber bridges these gaps by providing new resources that nurture strategic decision-making.

The Geelong Chamber has partnered with The Gordon, a proud institution and huge supporters of our region’s economic prosperity, and Deakin University through DeakinCo, offering practical workplace learning that propels organisations into the future.

Our leadership courses equip business owners and managers with the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of today’s business environment. Effective leadership is the cornerstone of any successful enterprise, and these courses nurture traits like strategic thinking, effective communication, and team management. By empowering local leaders and businesses, the chamber fosters a culture of visionary thinking that ripples through businesses, creating an environment ripe for innovation and growth.

Let’s take a quick look at the two Leadership programs we have recently announced:

Firstly, The Leadership Edge, power by The Gordon will give business leaders and owners an industry-designed and immersive leadership experience. Participants will gain access to diagnostic tools, industry-based learning modules, and build coveted relationships with likeminded individuals that will rockets their performance together. Those who should consider this program are small / medium enterprise owners, leaders, and senior management that want to affect change on themselves, their teams, and their organisations.

Secondly, The Executive Academy, delivered by DeakinCo invests further into the vast Executive and Senior Leadership talent in our region. Executives will take their strategic leadership skills to the next level with unique experiences complimenting Deakin’s globally recognised course delivery including mentoring, CEO roundtables and industry-based Executive development opportunities. Executives and Senior Leaders will benefit most from the program’s innovative design along with the attainment of Deakin’s Graduate Certificate in Management.

The importance of the Geelong Chamber of Commerce’s initiatives goes beyond individual businesses; it shapes the region’s economic trajectory.

The Geelong Chamber of Commerce’s commitment to providing leadership courses, training programs, and business resources holds immense significance. It is a testament to the chamber’s dedication to fostering excellence within the local business community. As the business landscape continues to evolve, these initiatives become not only advantageous but necessary. By investing in its members, the chamber is paving the way for a prosperous future for Geelong and its businesses, ensuring they remain resilient, adaptable, and thriving in the face of challenges yet to come.

The first cohorts are planned to commence late October 2023. Expressions of interest can be made via the following links:

As the dust settles on the cancellation announcement of the Victorian Commonwealth Games, opinion is divided as to whether the Andrews Government has done the right thing. It’s what happens next that matters more.

Business confidence in the Labor State Government’s ability to deliver the Commonwealth Games has only ever been lukewarm at best. Previous deadline announcements lacked detail whilst regional updates and forums held in Geelong failed to provide clarity and answer questions. There was rarely any genuine excitement from the Geelong business community which you would rightly expect when your regional city is on the doorstep of hosting an international event.

The announcement to cancel the Games, whilst a surprise to many, was not a shock to most.

The Commonwealth Games may be lost but there is still plenty of work to do on the back of Premier Daniel Andrews’ announcement and that time starts now. The State Government has a rare second chance card to play but the mistakes of the past 2 years simply cannot be repeated.

Businesses have taken the opportunity to utilise the Commonwealth Games procurement hub and these businesses have invested time, effort and resources into tenders aimed at boosting their future. They will be feeling the pain of this cancellation announcement and the Geelong community will rally in support for those that need it.

The Premier’s announcement sparks an opportunity for the Geelong business community to rally behind and support the alternative regional investment package. Affordable housing, community infrastructure, and sporting stadiums are required investments the Labor State Government need to deliver to support growth and prosperity of the Greater Geelong region.

Furthermore, these regional investments must be provided with a local procurement strategy. More than 7,500 jobs associated with the Commonwealth Games will likely disappear but the right thing to do is for the State Government to further support local skills, training and job creation demonstrating a tangible legacy driving a regional economic boost well beyond 2026.

What the Geelong community will not tolerate is more miscalculated investment, project timing and infrastructure delivery that lacks purpose, clarity and completion. Our community deserves outcomes and a consultative approach is required.

Legacy projects no longer need to be delivered to Commonwealth Games specifications or deadlines.

The Geelong Chamber of Commerce is calling on Premier Dan Andrews to ensure the promised infrastructure is built right for the region. Through engagement with sporting organisations, the City of Greater Geelong, business organisations and relevant stakeholder groups, there is a window of opportunity to get this right. The proposed regional investment decisions must be well-thought, strategic, and consultatively made ensuring that Geelong receives legacy infrastructure that meets the needs of our community now and into the future.

Sustainable serviceability is imperative. Bricks and mortar investments are welcomed but must be met with operational support ensuring new community assets remain accessible and affordable to all. Financially sustainable community service delivery needs to be accurately considered and appropriately supported.

With the previously immovable deadline of the Commonwealth Games now irrelevant, we simply cannot allow time to get away. The time to act on the investment promises and legacy delivery is now and the Geelong community is more ready than ever.
